Summer Camp 2020 Positions Available
Camp New Hope is a summer camp for individuals with disabilities ages "8 to 80" (8+ years). Camp runs from June 7th - July 31st. Training Dates: Mandatory All Staff Training, Leadership Training, Kitchen Staff Training, CPR/Food Handler's Training will be announced at a later date.

*Day, Night, C.I.T. and Substitute Counselors
Day Counselors' hours are 9:00 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday. Night Counselors' hours are 5:00 pm-9 am, Sunday-Friday. Substitute Counselors' hours could be either day or night shift. Counselors may do additional hours on the opposite shift as needed. C.I.T. hours are 9:00 am-5 pm. Tuesday and Thursday.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist in leading individuals within a small group in daily aspects of camp life, programs, and activities.
- Enthusiastically participate in camp activities and encourage camper participation in camp activities.
- Follow the direction of the supervisor and leadership staff and work effectively as a team member with other staff.
- Properly, adequately, and continuously monitor campers under your supervision, and take responsibility for assisting with their comfort and ensuring their safety. Follow all safety, emergency, and health regulations.
- Know each camper and the supports they need by reviewing their camp application and caregiver’s instructions. This includes eating, toileting schedule, bathing, etc.
- Care or assist in care for the needs of the camper including toileting, changing, bathing, and feeding.
- Sleep in cabins with campers and assist in any overnight needs of the campers. (Night Counselors Only)
- Follow all camp policies and procedures
Qualifications:
- Ability to assist or lead a group of campers as a unit.
- Maturity and adaptability in all situations.
- Ability to work under Leadership staff in a cooperative efficient manner.
- Ability to handle camper behaviors.
The following experience is helpful:
- Working with people who have special needs/developmental disabilities, camping, recreation.
- Trained or willing to train in CPR/ First Aid Certification and Food Handler's License.
- CNA licensed or experience doing CNA work.
Lifeguards and Lifeguard Substitute
Lifeguard's hours are 9:00 am-4 pm. Monday-Thursday. Tuesday Night 6 pm-8 pm. Lifeguard Substitute hours vary as regular lifeguards need time off. Will work June 29-July 3 for day camp and July 27-July 31 for second-day camp.
Lifeguards may do additional hours as a sub counselor as needed.
Responsibilities include:
- Guarding the pool, lakefront area, or on the boat.
- Assist in the mobility of campers into the pool, boat, or dock area. Including the ability to lift individuals into the chairlift, or assist downstairs into the pool. Assist with programs and activities as assigned.
- Enthusiastically participate in camp activities and encourage camper participation in camp activities.
- Follow the direction of the supervisor and leadership staff and work effectively as a team member with other staff.
- Properly, adequately, and continuously monitor campers under your supervision, and take responsibility for assisting with their comfort and ensuring their safety. Follow all safety, emergency, and health regulations.
- Know each camper and the supports they need in the water areas of camp by reviewing their camp application and caregiver’s instructions.
- Care or assist in care for the needs of the camper while in activity area (sunscreen on, hydration, shade as needed)
- Follow all camp policies and procedures
Qualifications:
- MUST have Lifeguard Certification
- MUST have CPR/ First Aid Certification
- Ability to assist with mobility of campers in pool/lakefront areas
- Maturity and adaptability in all situations.
- Ability to lead others and take charge in an emergency situation.
- Ability to work under the supervision of the acting Manager in a cooperative efficient manner.
- Ability to handle camper behaviors.
The following experience is helpful:
- Working with people who have special needs/developmental disabilities, camping, recreation.
Cooks
Morning Cooks' hours are 6 am-1 pm Monday-Friday. Evening Cooks' hours are 3 pm-7 pm Sunday and 1 pm-7 pm Monday-Thursday.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintains a clean and safe kitchen. Ensures kitchen equipment is in working order and the food prep area is safe and sanitary.
- Follows all health standards and regulations, established by the Dept of Health and by the camp policy.
- Assists in the serving of meals, tracking food inventory.
- Complies with safety precautions given by their supervisor and with the camp policies
- Quickly reports needed repairs and safety and sanitation problems to their supervisor.
- Is continuously aware of the health and welfare of campers with regard to food. Prepares food according to special diets and food restrictions for all meals.
- They do not supervise campers. May assist campers while they are in the cafeteria line and in the presence of camp counselors.
Qualifications
- Must hold an IL food Sanitation License (Evening Cook) or an IL Food Handler's License (Morning/Assistant Cook)
- Ability to prepare nutritious meals for up to 125 people with assistance.
- A thorough understanding of the health and safety standards that apply to food preparation, including Public Health requirements, camp policies, and risk management plans.
- Understanding of special dietary needs including those for diabetics, pureed diets, mechanical soft, etc.
- Previous experience cooking for large groups. Ability to cook on own as necessary, typically with assistance.
